Michael Dorohovich is an art photographer, a portrait and documentary photographer, a classic of contemporary Ukrainian photography.
Laureate of the world photography award «MonoVisions Black & White Photography Awards 2023 (single)» (London, United Kingdom).
His work has earned worldwide recognition for its vivid, deeply psychological black-and-white photographs devoted to the rich cultural heritage, ethnic minorities and authentic personalities of his native region, bringing him a significant number of international awards and exhibitions in prestigious museums and galleries of Japan, India, the USA and many European countries. His interviews have been published on the world’s most prestigious photography platforms, such as The Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester, Massachusetts, USA), MUSE WORLD (New York, USA), MonoVisions Black & White Photography Magazine (London, United Kingdom), TIFA — Tokyo International Foto Awards 2022 (Tokyo, Japan), BIFA — Budapest International Foto Awards 2024, Prix de la Photographie de Paris (PX3) (Paris, France) and Artscope Magazine (Quincy, Massachusetts, USA).
Author of photo projects that have presented the culture and traditions of Zakarpattia to the whole world:
«Notable and Interesting Personalities of Zakarpattia» (2021–2026) — a series of deep psychological portraits of the region’s iconic people.
«Cultural Ethnos of Transcarpathia» (2022) — a study of the traditions and national dress of the region’s indigenous inhabitants.
«Highland Inhabitants of the Ukrainian Carpathians» (2023–2026) — a photographic story about people who live and work in the harsh conditions of the highlands.
«The Unique Women of the Keldelari Roma Culture» (2023–2025) — a unique project revealing the closed and distinctive culture of the Roma community.
«Under the Old Sky» (2025–2026) — a photo project dedicated to preserving the ancient wooden churches of Zakarpattia and the bond between generations.
Author of the documentary film portraits «Confession of an Artist» about Ivan Brovdi (2022) and «The Show Goes On» about painter Yurii Dykun (2023).
In 2024 the Chairman of the Committee of the Campina Photographic Exhibitions Society conferred on him the honorary title HONORARY – Hon.CPE for his active international work promoting and supporting the art of photography around the world. Honorary – Hon.CPE is the highest honorary title of the Campina Photographic Exhibitions Society.
In 2025 the One Eyeland platform named him the best portrait photographer of Ukraine.
In 2024 he was appointed Ambassador of the Zakarpattia region in the field of art by the regional state administration.
In 2023–25 he was listed among the TOP-100 most influential people of Zakarpattia.
In 2025 he published the photo album «Candor».
In 2026 Michael Dorohovich founded the DoRóGo art prize, aimed at supporting and developing young authors in the photographic art of Zakarpattia. The prize is intended for photographers aged 18 to 30 and seeks to encourage them to reflect deeply on the life of the region, its cultural heritage and contemporary social challenges through visual art. The concept of the prize is built on the idea of inner freedom and creative courage: DoRóGo is positioned as a distinction for artists who consistently develop their own authorial vision without betraying their artistic principles. Particular attention is paid to the search for meaning in photography — not only as an aesthetic object, but as an instrument for understanding reality. The DoRóGo prize is seen as a platform for shaping a new generation of photographers capable of representing the region in the contemporary cultural context.
He currently teaches audiovisual art at the Academy of Culture and Arts in Uzhhorod.
Throughout his life he has practised solo mountaineering and solo mountain trekking, travelling the ranges of the Carpathians, Crimea, the Caucasus, the Alps, Altai, Kamchatka, the Pamir and Tian Shan — recording all his mountain journeys and summit ascents in landscape photographs.
He is married to Olena Dorohovich; together they are raising their daughter Greta.
